The team at Miss Mi Perth are excited to be participating in City of Perth’s 2024 Plateful Perth, returning to the city in August!
About Plateful Perth
Plateful Perth is a month long celebration of eating and drinking in the City of Light, created for you by the City of Perth. During the month of August, diners can explore an amazing plethora of flavours as Perth’s best restaurants and bars showcase their talents, offering delicious dishes and exciting dining experiences.
Perth foodies should keep an eye on the Plateful Perth website for more announcements. While we wait, we sat down with Miss Mi Perth Head chef Alex De Leon to find out more about why he thinks Perth is a fantastic destination for dining out.
Q&A With Miss Mi’s Alex De Leon
Q: We are excited to see Plateful Perth is returning in August 2024 in a celebration of our City’s dining scene. How do you think the city’s dining scene has evolved over the past few years? How did Perth cultivate a new reputation for great food experiences?
A: I think we can attribute Perth’s evolution into a culinary destination to a combination of factors, including culinary diversity, emphasis on local produce, the rise of talented chefs, improved hospitality standards, and a cultural shift towards food appreciation. Another factor is that diners are more educated about different cultures. They’re excited by new trends, and they’re always looking for something fresh and out of their routine.
Q: Miss Mi recently celebrated its first birthday! As a relatively new restaurant opening in the City of Perth, what trends or new experiences do you think diners can look forward to over the next couple of years?
A: We constantly create new menu offerings and we like to surprise our diners with dishes they haven’t seen anywhere else. Dishes like our Pandesal or Batata Vada are hugely popular where they originate, but you might not immediately recognise their names on a menu. We want to keep refreshing our menu so whenever you dine with us there is something fun and exciting to experience.
In the bigger picture, I believe diners can expect to see continued focus on sustainability, with more restaurants prioritizing locally sourced and environmentally friendly ingredients.
Q: What do you think makes the city a great place for foodies to visit and why?
A: Perth’s unique combination of diverse culinary offerings, fresh local produce, talented chefs, food festivals, and warm hospitality make it a must-visit destination for foodies seeking memorable gastronomic experiences.
Q: For last year’s Plateful Perth, Miss Mi celebrated the state’s famous truffles and combined them deliciously with South East Asian spices and aromatics. What direction do you think you’ll take this year?
A: As we develop the final Plateful Perth menus for this year, we’ll focus on combining local ingredients and flavours with techniques from other parts of the world. This is something we already do at Miss Mi, for example with our rendang lamb shoulder. Rendang is traditionally made with beef, but we took the amazing flavours of the curry and combined it with local lamb to create one of our most popular dishes. We want to take this same concept and apply it to each different cuisine, so there will be something new and exciting for our diners every week.
